In 1861, when the city of Melbourne was just five years old, a horse race was born on the grassy green fields of Flemington racecourse. The race was the idea of then Victorian Chief Commissioner of Police, Frederick Standish, who dubbed it The Melbourne Cup, and the event drew huge flocks of men and women from all over town.
Now in its 157th year, the Melbourne Cup is known as the race that stops a nation! It attracts more than 2 million viewers in Australia every year, with prize money for the race totalling a staggering AU$6.2 million in 2016. Famous not just for the horses but also the abundance of champagne and crazy fashions on the field, the race is held on the first Tuesday of November, and is a nationwide Australian public holiday.
Keeping with annual tradition, AustCham invites you to attend our event ‘The Melbourne Cup – Fashions on the Field’ on 7th November at the Garden Hotel. Set in a luxuriously decorated venue, attendees can dress to the nines while watching a live stream of the race and enjoy a delicious selection of finger food and beverages. Great prizes will be awarded to our best dressed attendees!
