John Siong is a distinguished academic and legal professional with more than 25 years of experience across the legal, business, and higher education sectors. His international career spans Australia, China, Canada, Malaysia and Brunei, where he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence in teaching, legal research, and strategic leadership within diverse cultural and professional environments.
Mr. Siong is currently completing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). His research focuses on Chinese consumer protection law and its comparative legal frameworks with the Australian Consumer Law, particularly in relation to emerging technologies such as automated vehicles and cross-border commercial transactions. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of regulatory convergence and divergence between Australia and China and offers valuable insights into international consumer protection mechanisms.
To support his doctoral research, Mr. Siong was appointed as a Foreign Scholar at Guangzhou University Law School, where he has been actively engaged in legal research since 2023. In this capacity, he conducts on-the-ground research into Chinese legal systems, collaborates with academic peers, and contributes to the university’s broader mission of fostering international legal scholarship. His work in Guangzhou enriches his comparative legal analysis and positions him as a key academic bridge between Chinese and Australian legal education and policy development. He is also appointed as an external teacher at Guangzhou University Law School, where he is responsible for teaching international law disciplines.
Mr. Siong holds a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and a Master of Business Administration from QUT, a Juris Doctor from Bond University, and a Bachelor of Management from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, with a specialization in Marketing and a minor in Finance. This strong interdisciplinary background enables him to operate effectively at the intersection of law, commerce, and academia.
At QUT, Mr. Siong previously served as an Academic Board Member and currently serves as a Sessional Academic within the Faculty of Business and Law. He contributes to curriculum delivery and student support across both law and business programs. His teaching is guided by a deep commitment to inclusive education, student development, and academic integrity. He also serves as a one-on-one tutor for the Keystone of Success program within the Oodgeroo Unit, supporting students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in both the QUT Law School and Business School.
Internationally, he continues to expand his academic footprint through his appointment as an external teacher at the Beijing University of Technology Law School, Zhuhai Campus, where he teaches postgraduate law students and supports the internationalisation of legal education in China.
Outside academia, Mr. Siong has held senior leadership roles in the legal sector, advising across areas including migration, property, and corporate law. He has worked with a broad range of clients, from individuals to multinational enterprises, offering strategic legal advice and managing cross-border legal matters. In the banking and finance industry, he led operational teams and was responsible for performance systems and electronic banking networks. His experience also includes leadership positions in the hospitality and consulting industries, where he drove strategic growth, operational innovation, and client-focused solutions.
Fluent in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and conversational Malay, Mr. Siong brings cultural intelligence and linguistic versatility to both his academic and professional pursuits. Through his integrated career in law, business, and education—and with a growing body of scholarly research in comparative consumer law—he continues to contribute to meaningful dialogue between legal systems and to the education of globally minded legal and business professionals.
